I recently came across an article in the May 2015 issue of VFW Magazine by Kelly Gibson on Art & Combat.  She wrote about a program that Elizabeth Washburn has that helps combat veterans use art as an expressive outlet.

I’ve often been intrigued by art as a healing tool.  I know the positive effects it has on me and have often thought it would provide some type of healing in others too.  Combat Veterans are near and dear to my heart.  I’ve known a few soldiers that have returned from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan but one in particular I’ve seen up close – that is my husband.  I am excited to see the use of art and classes and special programs to help healing.

Gibson mentions that the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago has been dedicated to art since 1981, providing a place to offer therapy for the veteran-artists.  You can check out their current display at www.nvam.org.  Elizabeth Washburn’s Combat Arts San Diego can be found at www.combatartssd.org.
